THOUGHT/QUOTE OF THE WEEK:

Character is not an inheritance;
each person must build it for himself or herself.

The Fourth Object of Kiwanis:  To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive, and serviceable citizenship.

Kiwanis Education #3:  The first name suggested for the organization that became Kiwanis was “Benevolent Order Brothers.” But Ottie Robertson, a charter member of the Detroit No. 1 club, didn’t like it. “It seems to me.” he said, “that Benevolent Order Brothers is a mighty peculiar name for an organization of businessmen. Who wants to be a BOB?”

THIS WEEK:
Mr. Paul Ardoin of the St. Martin Parish Library was our guest speaker.  Mr. Ardoin touched on many different areas that the library is expanding into and the fact that the Library Board is in the process of hiring a replacement for retiring head Librarian, Jeanne Essmeier.  Thanks to Carol and Tommy for bringing Mr. Ardoin to speak.

Larry Roy, Margaret Richard and Judy Bonhomme attended the Mid Winter Conference held in Lafayette on January 16.  It was reported that the conference was very interesting.

The Kiwanis Club of New Iberia is inviting Kiwanians to two special  meetings – Jan. 28 with guest speaker, Lawrence Svendson on Cap & Trade; and Feb. 4 Leo Honeycutt on Edwin Edwards (a biography).  If you’re interested in attending, the cost is $13.75 for the meal.

Gerry hosted the monthly board meeting and Pepper Festival wrap meeting at her house on Thursday evening.

Pepper Festival meeting report:
 • Gerry and Jean presented Pepper Festival reports and some discussion was held as to which areas need to be addressed and reorganized for next year.
 • At this time, there is no Pepper Chair in place for the coming festival.

Board meeting report:

 • Larry requested that board members call him if they are unable to attend a board meeting.

 • Progress on the Builders Club for St. Martinville Junior High was reported by Margaret Richard.  She stated that Caroline Jean Batiste has volunteered to be the teacher/advisor and that McKenna Andrepont, AHS Key Club President, spoke to the prospective members.

 • Steve and Gerry confirmed that they are the publicity committee, along with Carol Lagarde.

 • Peggy Hardy presented the financial report which was adopted by the board.

 • Under new business, Larry presented for consideration the thoughts of our members which included:  attract more members; involve more members to participate and lead; lower monthly dues and other expenses; time and number of meetings.  After much discussion, it was adopted that Steve chair committee aimed at each member at a meeting contacting a member who is not at the meeting to invite them to come to the next meeting.

 • After discussion, it was agreed upon that we table a donation for the people of Haiti until we have collected “From the Heart”.

 • Larry announced that the next board meeting will be on Feb. 18  and following discussion, changed the board meeting time to 6:30 p.m. at the Sheriff’s office.
