THOUGHT/QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
There are those who look at things the way they are,
       and ask why...
I dream of things that never were, and ask why not?
                             -- Robert F. Kennedy

The Sixth Object of Kiwanis:  To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism, which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill.

Kiwanis Education #64 : The Kiwanis administrative year begins on October 1. Originally, clubs and districts operated on the calendar year. However, Kiwanis International officers were elected at the annual conventions in early summer and assumed office immediately or, beginning in 1950, on August 1. This led to many problems of budgeting, programming, and leadership. For example, each International President worked with two sets of district governors and club presidents, and vice versa. Finally, in 1969 the administrative year beginning October 1 was adopted for all levels of Kiwanis organization.

THIS WEEK...

 K. R. I. S.  You’ll be hearing a lot more about this acronym this year.  Kiwanians Reading In Schools is our newest project.  Jessica Landry, Principal at ELC, along with two teachers – Yolanda Saul and Rose Foti, were our guest speakers at the meeting this morning.  Their insight into what they’d like us to do at their school in the form of reading to 1st grade students who have been identified as “in need of extra attention”.  CHANGING THE WORLD ONE CHILD … AT A TIME – that’s what we’re doing here, fellow Kiwanians.  This is where we walk the walk after having talked the talk for so long.  At next week’s meeting, someone from ELC will again be at our meeting to give us more preparation for our reading experience.  And Larry will be signing up volunteers for the project.  PLEASE MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO ATTEND THIS MEETING.

[This is what Marti Harrell is doing in New Iberia]  "Inspired by my Kiwanis Club's K.R.I.S. program (Kiwanians Reading in Schools) and since I can't get to St. Martinville to read to the little ones there, starting Monday, (and every "school Monday" the rest of this school year) "Aunti M" will be reading to a small group of kindergarten students at St. Edward School during my lunch hour."

Dennis gave the club an update on the purchase of AED’s.  The Sheriff’s office is purchasing AED’s for all school resource officers’ cars and Dennis is contracting with Zwolle for excellent pricing for these units along with our purchase for an AED.  We are also discussing the possibility of our sponsored youth contributing and we could perhaps purchase an additional AED for Sr. High with their assistance.

SAVE THE DATE – Installation Banquet will be held on October 7 at 6:00 p.m. at Clambeaugh’s.  The cost will be $20 per person for your meal, iced tea and dessert.   A cash bar will be available.   Be thinking about your donation to the Silent Auction and bring your checkbook to bid on other Auction items.
