                                   BIRTHSTONE FOR JULY - RUBY
The birthstone of July is also the traditional 40th Wedding Anniversary Gift. It's name 'ruby' was derived from the Latin word 'rubens', meaning 'red' and the ruby owes its red color to chromium impurities. It ranks 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness, second only to the diamond. Most rubies are treated to enhance color, with heat treatment being the most common practice.
Those who wear Rubies are believed blessed with wealth and fertility and protected from pain and sorrow. Legend has it that ancient warriors implanted rubies under their skin to give them courage before entering into battle. However, only genuine rubies contained these powers and if the gemstones were fake, they would bring bad fortune. Imitations have been traced as far back as Roman times.
Rubies have been used for centuries for healing. Ancient cultures believed the ruby could cure ailments of the digestive system, heart and the blood.  In England, rubies as gifts were popular among royalty and are often used for coronation ceremonies around the world.
Even today, it is considered lucky to wear ruby jewelry on Tuesdays.

THOUGHT/QUOTE OF THE WEEK:

Friendship is like a checking account
and only works if you continue to make deposits.

The Fourth Object of Kiwanis:  To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive, and serviceable citizenship.

Kiwanis Education #56 : Each club secretary annually receives the Kiwanis International Directory, listing every Kiwanis club in the world, its time and place of meeting, and its president and secretary. Much of this information also is available on-line at kiwanis.org/locator.html. Each secretary also receives the Kiwanis International Supplies Catalog, which includes all Kiwanis-related supplies and merchandise available for sale to clubs and individuals.

THIS WEEK

Our guest speaker was our newest Kiwanian, not even inducted yet, Suzanne deMahy.  Suzanne has taken on the commitment to participate in the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Team In Training Program.  Her goal is to raise $10,000.00 for this most worthwhile cause.  Suzanne spoke to us about her involvement and training for the sponsored marathon in San Francisco.  If you would like to contribute to Suzanne’s fundraising goal, you can go to this link:  http://pages.teamintraining.org/la/nikesf09/sdemahy  or you can mail your donation to P. O. Box 11742, New Iberia, LA 70562, or you can give it to Suzanne yourself at one of the Kiwanis meetings.

OUR NEXT MEETING IS NOT AT THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE.  We will be meeting at the temporary court location at 307 Church Street.  Parish President Guy Cormier will be our guest speaker.  Please make every effort to attend.

You are cordially invited to attend …

Kiwanis has several things in the works so please check the calendar of events for dates, times and locations of each thing.  We are especially excited about the Social/Recruitment BBQ and the Pepper Festival Committee meeting.  You are guaranteed to be fed at both events.  If you would like to volunteer to help with the BBQ social, please contact chair Leslie Thibodeaux at 364-6793 to offer your services.  The menu will include: BBQ Chicken, Baked Beans, Potato Salad, Green Salad, Bread, and Dessert.  We will need a headcount in order to have enough food prepared.  Please call Les or email Gerry at gerryleblanc5@aol.com  to say yea or nay. We are also hoping to induct our two newest members at the BBQ.

Remember: We have a lot of fish to fry... in Kiwanis!
